Why Kristianne chose Oriental Medicine as a career
Kristianne became a Certified Surgical Technologist in July 1993. She was employed full-time at the University of Chicago Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois assisting surgeons in surgeries such as Neuro, Ortho, Transplant, Vascular, Reconstructive, Thoracic, Craniofacial Reconstruction and Gastro Intestinal. After three years of inspiration with the O.R. team Kristianne decided to work for the Regional Organ Bank of Illinois as a Bone and Tissue Procurement Technician, removing bones and tissues from donors. “It was the love I have for people and the desire to better the quality of life for others that made it possible for me to work in a stressful but rewarding environment.” And that’s all that Kristianne needed to propel her forward into eventually finding the career in Oriental Medicine. “I wanted to be a practitioner of medicine since I was a child. I have a passion in helping others heal, but prescribing Western Medicine didn’t feel like the right fit for me, as I was taught that our bodies had their own innate way of healing themselves if given the right environment and tools. Then I remembered receiving Acupuncture in 1982 at age 11 for chronic leg pain (reflex sympathetic dystrophy). “My parents had gone to every doctor possible that they thought could help and through my great-uncle (who was Napropathic Doctor) and his connections they found an acupuncturist. “I didn’t know what he was doing but once my treatment was over he showed me the needles. I remember feeling more relaxed and pain-free for the first time in months (which feels like years to a child).” After raising two children and starting my son in Kindergarden I decided to go back to school full-time for my pre-requisites that I was missing in January 2005. One year later, 62 credits, a 4.0 GPA and a member of the National Honors Society, Kristianne was accepted into the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine for a start date of January 2006.
